As part of its humanitarian mission, SANURA (Service in Action for the Needy in a Radiant Union), in partnership with the American organization Helping Hand for Relief and Development<\/em> and with support from the Togolese Ministry of Health, has launched a campaign to provide free cataract surgeries in the towns of Nots\u00e9 and Tohoun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This initiative aims to combat preventable blindness, particularly among vulnerable rural populations who cannot afford the cost of surgery. Thanks to a grant from Helping Hand<\/em>, 140 free surgeries were made possible and distributed equally between the two areas based on recommendations from the Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campaign Launch in Nots\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first phase of the campaign took place in Nots\u00e9 on May 17 and 18, 2025, targeting 70 cataract cases. Despite heavy rainfall and transportation challenges, many patients cited the lack of funds to travel from remote farming areas, 68 individuals were successfully operated on during the first day alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ophthalmology team at the Nots\u00e9 hospital, supported by medical personnel deployed by the Ministry of Health, ensured the surgeries were carried out efficiently. The mayor of Haho 2, who calls his jurisdiction the \u00ab\u00a0Green Commune,\u00a0\u00bb made a personal appearance to support patients from his community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heartfelt Reactions from Beneficiaries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many moving stories were shared by patients and their families, expressing profound gratitude and joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can read again and see my wife\u2019s face,\u201d said 43-year-old Edou Komlan, after the bandages were removed following surgery on both eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs that how big you\u2019ve grown? I can see you\u2026 Where is your aunt?\u201d asked 75-year-old Dekede Abla, who had also undergone surgery on both eyes, when she saw her grandson after years of impaired vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiodendji Gbanu, 66, who had surgery on his left eye, immediately searched for his son with his newly restored sight. When their eyes met, they exchanged a silent, emotional smile and embraced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the removal of bandages, post-operative consultations were held, along with a general counseling session on best practices to support healing. Free eye drops were distributed, and follow-up appointments were scheduled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cataracts are an eye condition characterized by the gradual clouding of the lens, which prevents light from properly reaching the retina. While primarily caused by aging, cataracts can also result from trauma, metabolic disorders, or genetic factors. If untreated, the condition can lead to serious complications, including blindness. Fortunately, a simple and quick surgical procedure can often restore full vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next Steps and Community Hopes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday, May 18, was dedicated to post-surgery consultations and the registration of new cataract cases. Many people are now on a waiting list, hoping that Helping Hand<\/em> and the government will return soon to offer them the same opportunity for free surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second phase of the campaign is scheduled for May 23\u201324, 2025 in Tohoun<\/strong>, where the remaining 70 cases will be treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
